Our Work
The Cotswolds is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful areas of England. It is a wonderful mix of expansive open views, woodlands, rivers and rolling wolds. The quiet hidden valleys contrast with the dramatic scarp edge which affords stunning views across the Severn Vale to Wales. The landscape contains internationally important grasslands, rare species, geological and heritage sites.
In 1966 its beauty was recognised through its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the Government. It is also recognised by the World Conservation Union as an internationally important landscape.
It is easy to assume that this beautiful countryside will be here forever, but without the active involvement of people and communities this valuable landscape will deteriorate. As a concerned group of individuals, we are working to raise money to support projects which are initiated locally and maintain this world famous Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) as a living, working environment. We are keen to help a wide range of communities, groups and organisations to achieve this aim.
One example is the dry stone walls made of the distinctive limestone. These walls are an integral part of the Cotswolds providing important habitats for indigenous plants and animals. There are over £4,000 miles of dry stone walls in the AONB. That’s longer than the Great Wall of China. However, if they are to continue to contribute to the local biodiversity; they need to be maintained. Currently, the cost of conserving or building these important features is approximately £200 per yard (or metre).
